Why I built Bark Marker

My name is Rodney Lunt. I have owned dogs for most of my adult life, and over those decades I have been on both sides of a barking problem. That is the whole reason this thing exists.

Both sides of the fence

Years ago, my own dogs were the problem and I genuinely did not know it. I was out at work, the dogs were home, and they were barking in a way that was driving the neighbours up the wall. I was not ignoring anyone. I simply was not there to hear it, so I had no idea it was happening until it became a thing between households. Once I understood, I felt terrible, and I sorted it out. But I have never forgotten how easy it is to be the inconsiderate neighbour without meaning to be, and without any way of knowing.

I have also been on the other side, more than once. I have been the resident trying to live next to an animal that barks for hours, with an owner who either could not see the problem or did not want to. I have had to involve the council over other people’s poorly behaved animals, and I learned the hard way that good intentions and a frustrated phone call get you nowhere. What councils want is evidence: dates, times, durations, a pattern. Without that, you are just one more person who reckons the dog next door barks a lot, and nothing moves.

So I have stood in both pairs of shoes. I know the guilt of being the owner who did not realise, and I know the slow grind of being the neighbour who cannot get anyone to take it seriously. Bark Marker is built for both of those people.

What the problem really is

When a dog barks too much, almost everyone reaches for the same two tools: their memory and their patience. Both run out fast. You think it barked “most of the morning”, but you cannot say it barked from 6:10am to 7:05am and again from 6:40pm to 7:15pm, four days running. The owner, meanwhile, was at work and never heard a thing, so when you raise it they honestly believe you are exaggerating. Nobody is lying. There is just no shared, measurable record that both sides can look at.

That gap is where the conflict lives. The neighbour feels ignored. The owner feels accused. And the dog, which is usually barking because it is bored, anxious, or reacting to something, keeps right on barking because nobody has actually worked out the pattern.

What Bark Marker does about it

Bark Marker is a small monitor you set up in your home. It listens continuously, detects when a dog is barking, and lets you confirm with a tap which barks belong to the dog that is actually bothering you. From those confirmations it learns that specific dog’s bark, so it stops counting other dogs and passing noise. It also notes the sounds happening at the same time, which often reveals the trigger: a gate, a passing school run, a particular time of day.

At the end, it produces a clear, timestamped report. Hour-by-hour distribution, daily patterns, a full incident log, and a plain-English description of how the data was gathered. It is the measurable record I wish I had owned in both situations.

Why I offer it as a hire, not a sale

Most people with a barking problem do not want to own a piece of monitoring gear forever. They want the problem gone. So I hire out ready-to-go units by the week. That is the whole offer, and it keeps things simple for someone who is already at the end of their rope.

The outcome I actually want

Here is the part I care about most. The best result is the one where this never reaches the council at all. If you can sit down with the owner and show them a calm, factual record of what is happening, most reasonable people respond to that far better than to an angry note. It takes the heat out of the conversation, because it is not your word against theirs any more. It is just the data.

And if you are the owner reading this, I am genuinely not here to make you the villain. I have been you. Sometimes the kindest thing for your dog is to find out what is setting it off so you can fix it, and a record like this helps you do exactly that. And sometimes the accusation is simply wrong, your dog is quiet while you are out and someone has the wrong house. The same monitoring that proves a problem can just as easily clear your dog’s name, which is a fairer outcome for everyone than an argument neither side can settle.
